If you work for Money, You will settle for less

If you have happened to read the book Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, you will know that the philosophy of his Rich Das was completely opposite to that of his Poor Dad. During one of his recently concluded seminars, Robert Kiyosaki narrated an eye-opening story on how his Rich Dad taught him a valuable lesson in life.

When Robert was 9 years old, his Rich Dad told him to pick up all the cigarette butts that he can find on the street and collect it in a jar. Robert was promised $5 for every jar that he fills. Robert went about diligently collecting all the cigarette butts he could find. However to his rude surprise, when he placed the filled-up jars in front of his Rich Dad and asked for the $5, his Rich Dad told him that he would pay him in 6 years. Robert lost his mind and started complaining and bickering about how he his Rich Dad was a cheater. Listening to all of this, his Rich Dad agreed to pay him in 5 years. That got Robert started again. After much altercation and noise, Robert walked out of his Rich Dad’s house with the money – not $5, but 5 cents!! After a few days, when Robert had cooled down, his Rich Dad called him over and told him the lesson that had to be learnt from that experience. It was this – If you work for money, you will always settle for LESS!

This had held to my life. I remember when I failed miserably in my second business venture. I was so broke, that I had no other choice but to find a job. So when I went looking for a job I was looking only for the money, nothing else. I did find a job but the employer offered me a salary that was 40% lower than my asking price. He probably sensed my desperation. At first I told the employer that I got to think about it. When I started reflecting on it, I started coming up with reasons why I have to start at a lower price and then work my way up from there. My mind started forcing me to accept the offer, because it would rid me and my family of the pain of being broke. And guess what? I caved in. I did accept that offer.

When I heard the above story being related by Robert, I totally connected with the idea because it is very true. So what does one have to do? What should one work for, if not for money? The answer to that is – your purpose; your passion. You have to find a way to service customers in an industry wherein your passion or interest lies. If it doesn’t then you are just working for money, and if you working for money you will settle for less.

Walter Chrysler, founder of Chrysler Motor Company said, “I feel sorry for the person who can’t get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile.”
